High Risk of Forest Fires in Southern Italy: Norwegian Travelers Urged to Stay Alert
The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD) has issued a warning on its website about the persistent and high risk of forest fires in many areas of southern Italy. Travelers are advised to follow the advice and instructions of local authorities and be prepared for possible evacuation at short notice.
“Those planning to travel must prepare for potential situations that may arise. We recommend that everyone familiarize themselves with the situation, follow the news, and carefully assess the situation before deciding to travel,” stated the UD.
Norwegian citizens are urged to contact their tour operator or travel agency for information if their destination is at risk of forest fires. The decision to travel or not is ultimately up to the individual traveler, the statement added.
The Italian Civil Protection Department’s website, Dipartimento della Protezione Civile, provides general advice from Italian authorities.
On Tuesday morning, a forest fire led to the temporary closure of the airport in Palermo, the largest city in Sicily. It was reopened at 11 a.m.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised Norwegian vacationers in Southern Europe to remain vigilant and monitor the development of the forest fires.
“Staying updated on the situation, listening to advice from local authorities, and following their instructions is crucial. Travelers who are booked with tour operators should also seek information from their travel company,” said Tuva Bogsnes, the communication director at the UD.
The UD is closely monitoring the situation from its 24-hour center in Oslo and through its embassies in the affected countries, Bogsnes added.
