Faced with the high risk of fire this Tuesday, August 15, a public holiday, the Var prefecture has decided to prohibit access to certain forest areas, but also to advise against access to the Hyères islands.
The Var department, which was spared by the mega-fires that occurred this summer elsewhere in Europe, intends to continue this momentum.
The preventive nature of banning certain wooded areas has already been used, such as last weekend, when, on Sunday August 6, all the massifs were closed to the public. The prefecture partly justifies these decisions by the fact that 90% of forest fires are linked to the presence of humans or their recklessness.
This Tuesday, August 15 is a public holiday, but Riviera residents and holidaymakers will have to do without 4 mountain ranges: in Centre-Var, Corniche des Maures, Maures and Estérel. Access, circulation and the mere presence of the public are prohibited.
The massifs of the Islands of Hyères, Sainte-Baume, Haut-Var, the Monts Toulonnais, the Plateau de Canjuers are at serious risk of fire. Thus, access to them is not recommended and work is prohibited.
“With the exception of agricultural, forestry or general interest work from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. This work must be accompanied by an extinguishing device” explains the Var prefecture.
Two motorway areas of the A57 are prohibited to the public this Tuesday, and closed to traffic. These are that of Suvé du Vent, located in Puget-Ville, and that of Lauvets, in Carnoules.
In 2021, the fire of Cannet des Maures which had destroyed more than 7000 hectares had started precisely of such a motorway rest area, located in the municipality of Gonfaron.
