Gloria Rodríguez says the cost of living has risen dramatically after the pandemic, including rent which is her concern and that of many other New Yorkers.
A survey by the Regional Plan Association confirms these fears by indicating that 52 percent of those who participated in the survey say they are dissatisfied with the limited availability of affordable housing.
Gloria is retired and says that every year her rent goes up more.
“Everything is more expensive, everything is more difficult… It is very difficult especially for those who have children. They are made like this and they take that income from him, and you know how the person looks… it is more expensive than ever, ”said Gloria.
The survey found that only 41 percent of Big Apple residents are satisfied with the direction the city is going after the pandemic.
And up to 53 percent of those surveyed say they would move if possible.
Freddy León says that the cost of living has increased in the city making this more difficult for the working class to live here.
“Here it has also increased a lot to be New York, it has increased too much … the increase in the cost of living had never increased like this, here it increased by one thing 25 cents but not five pesos like that,” said León.
Crime also worries New Yorkers.
The survey revealed that a large number of respondents do not feel their communities are safe.
At least 37 percent say they have seen more crime now compared to before the pandemic started.
Maribel Flores says that there is so much crime that she is afraid to go out on the street.
“It’s scary, because you don’t know who’s coming after you. You have to be alert because the truth is scary … because I have seen a lot of theft of everything in the middle of the day and people shoot themselves, “said Maribel.
In addition, the poll showed that the vast majority of New Yorkers are in favor of vaccination mandates imposed on city workers.
