A fire in a residential building in Winterthur caused a great deal of property damage early on Wednesday morning (March 15, 2023). Nobody was injured.
Shortly after two o’clock, a passer-by reported to the operations center of the Winterthur city police that he had noticed smoke and flames on a building on Schlosshofstrasse. The police patrols, which were deployed immediately, were able to evacuate the residents of the three-row terraced house and the fire brigade immediately began extinguishing the fire. The fire was brought under control around 6 a.m. The extinguishing work is still ongoing and is difficult due to the design and location of the building. Because of the fire, Schlosstalstrasse will remain closed until around noon.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is being investigated by the fire investigation service of the Zurich cantonal police. According to initial findings, the property damage incurred exceeds the million mark.
Together with the Zurich cantonal police, the professional fire brigade and voluntary fire brigade and civil protection from Schutz & Intervention Winterthur, the Winterthur city police and, as a precaution, the rescue service of the Winterthur cantonal hospital with an emergency doctor were on duty.
