The Foundation Against Cancer has published the results of a survey on the use of e-cigarettes among young people and their environment. With the survey, the organization wanted to gain better insight into knowledge and behavior regarding e-cigarettes. Following the results, the Foundation Against Cancer is asking the Minister of Health to drastically reduce the number of permitted flavors and to implement a ban on the display of tobacco products at points of sale as soon as possible.

Remarkable figures
The survey was aimed at three groups: young people aged 15 to 20, pedagogical staff (teachers, care coordinators, management, etc.) and parents with children aged 12 to 20 living at home. According to the results, young people between 15 and 20 years old have a different relationship with e-cigarettes than those who are older. For people over 20, the e-cigarette is more of a way to try to quit smoking. Almost nine in ten indicate that they use e-cigarettes for this reason. For 15 to 20 year olds, however, vaping is an activity in itself.

Vaping seems to be common among young people
Only one in five intends to quit smoking in this way. The e-cigarette is clearly part of their daily lives. 35 percent of them have already used e-cigarettes, 32 percent did so in the past year and 16 percent indicate that they currently still vape. 61 percent of these young people have one or more friends who use e-cigarettes and 59 percent know someone under the age of 16 who does.
Also striking in this group: six in ten parents are not aware that their child vapes. And 29 percent of parents don’t know what type of vape their child is using. Disposable e-cigarettes are popular among the same group of young people due to their ease of use, price and the ability to conceal them. 86 percent therefore choose disposable e-cigarettes, while only 32 percent of parents are aware of them.

The main reason behind vaping among young people is the tasty flavors. This applies to 37 percent of users. 36 percent indicate that they vape to relieve stress, and 34 percent think it makes them calmer. A motivation for 27 percent of users is that the e-cigarette is less harmful than the traditional cigarette.
Reasons for not using disposable e-cigarettes include the fact that some people find it dirty, they don’t want to pick up an expensive habit or they think disposable e-cigarettes are unsustainable and bad for the environment.

The Foundation Against Cancer wants to limit supply
Since the different flavors have a great appeal to users, the Foundation against Cancer is committed to drastically limiting the number of flavors allowed. With regard to the sale of tobacco products in night shops, people are calling for a ban on display at the points of sale. That should prevent impulse purchases. The Foundation also supports a complete ban on disposable e-cigarettes.
