High Percentage of Costa Rican Households Devoting Significant Income to Personal Loan Repayments

Almost 500,000 households in Costa Rica allocate close to 30% of their income to pay personal loan installments, according to an analysis carried out by the Center for Financial Business Studies (CENFI), with data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC). .

Personal loans are used to pay for private medical services, entertainment, travel, purchases of household items, computers, cell phones, etc.

The report indicates that these credits are used more intensively by families of 3 or 4 members, and whose head of household is less than 50 years old. It also reveals that it is widely used by young people under 35 years of age.

Melizandro Quirós, Executive Director of CENFI, said that it is the only credit portfolio that is growing in the country.

Quirós detailed the factors that impact the behavior of personal loans.

Personal loans are used in households where the head has an unfinished secondary education; as well as those with a head of household who is taking university studies.
