A new intervention vehicle was hit on Wednesday evening June 28 on the A85 motorway, not far from Saumur. This brings the number of patrol vans stamped since the start of 2023 to 25.
The patrol van was hit around 7 p.m. on Wednesday June 28 on the A85 motorway towards Angers, near Saumur.
The vehicle “was hit by a truck while the patroller was picking up objects on the tracks, specifies Vinci Autoroutes which indicates that all of the vehicle’s signaling devices were nevertheless activated”.
The highway agent was luckily outside his vehicle and was not injured in the accident, however he is “shocked by the event”.
“Despite multiple awareness campaigns, this is the 25th collision of an intervention vehicle on the Vinci Autoroutes network since the beginning of the year, i.e. more than one collision per week”
Vinci Autoroutes, which operates the A85, however published a clip last November to recall the safety corridor rule, which all users of the motorway network must submit to.
“69% of drivers admit not respecting the safety corridor, this virtual barrier integrated into the French highway code since 2018 which requires drivers to get as far away as possible from stakeholders, and 28% admit not knowing this rule”, explains Vinci Autoroutes.
“The safety corridor consists of a virtual barrier that all drivers must respect when approaching personnel working on the side of a road, expressway or motorway”, further explains the motorway network manager.
Drivers must change lanes “so as to leave a free lane between the workers and their vehicles or shift as much as possible to the left of their lane and slow down significantly, especially off expressways and motorways”.
Non-compliance with this corridor is sanctioned by a 4th class fine, which results in a fixed fine of €135 and a loss of points depending on the offence.
