High jump: Woo Sang-hyeok wins silver at World Championships

SEOUL, July 19 (Yonhap) — South Korean high jumper Woo Sang-hyeok clinched silver at the World Championships in Athletics, narrowly missing out on the world title on the biggest sports stage of her career.

Equaling the national record set by himself, 2.35 meters, Woo finished second to Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim at the event which took place in Eugene, Oregon in the United States.

Woo, 26, attempted to become the first South Korean to win a world title in a track or field event. Woo was crowned world indoor champion in March this year, a first for South Korea.

Woo joined runner Kim Hyun-sub to be the only two South Korean medalists at the outdoor championships. Kim finished sixth in the men’s 20 kilometer walk event in 2011 but rose to third after athletes ahead of him tested positive for doping.
