Committed performance and high speed alone are not enough to crack Berlin. The Eagles lost 3-1 to the Eisbären in their first home game under coach Dallas Eakins. Jordan Szwarz was the Quadratestädter’s only goalscorer.
The Eagles started the match with a lot of steam and created good chances right from the start. After just 15 seconds, Kris Bennett ran freely towards goalkeeper Jake Hildebrand, but was denied by the American in the Berlin goal. In the first 60 seconds alone, Hildebrand had to grab three times. The guests only got into the game with the first power play of the game in the 6th minute, but the Eagles were secure at the back and were then very close to taking the lead when Stefan Loibl shot (9th minute). Until the end of the first third, Berlin dominated the game, but Arno Tiefensee defused the guests’ best chances.
In the second period, both teams played on equal terms again until the match was characterized by numerous penalties from the middle of the third. Marcel Noebels found his match when he was outnumbered in Tiefensee (28th), shortly afterwards Loibl narrowly missed the goal with his backhand on the outnumbered counterattack (29th). In direct response, Noebels only hit the post of the Mannheim goal from a tight angle. When the Eagles had a power play, Jyrki Jokipakka and Matthias Plachta (32′) fired dangerously, but the target didn’t want to go into the goal. It was only shortly before the second break that the disc was in the net for the first time when Tobias Eder converted his follow-up shot past Tiefensee at four-on-four to give Berlin the lead.
At the beginning of the final third, the guests played in the majority for almost three minutes, with Patrice Cormier deflecting Morgan Ellis’ shot into the Mannheim goal to make it 2-0 (42′). Berlin controlled the game, the Eagles didn’t give up and tried everything. But they couldn’t do more than Jordan Szwarz’s goal six minutes before the end. Shortly before the end, Frederik Tiffels made the final decision with a 3-1 into the empty Mannheim goal.
