High Demand for Travel Vaccinations at Santa María Nai Hospital

Every Thursday, the -2 floor of the Santa María Nai Hospital receives the many people from Ourense who travel to exotic places. There they are received by the staff of the Preventive Medicine service, in charge of immunizing travelers. This year, normalcy has returned to international traveland this is shown by the counter of queries made: almost 600 since January, the same number as in all of 2022.

The admissions staff, in fact, makes efforts to accommodate all the demand. “It is a challenge, because we have the problem of the last-minute traveler,” explains María Sande, head of the service. “We are putting travelers in slots on other days, we have them full on Thursdays until the end of September. It is that they are long consultations, of at least half an hour, sometimes entire families come, of course ”, details Isabel Gil, admission. Demand began to grow before Easter, and will remain high until October. “Although it is also true that more and more people travel in winter,” they add.

The CHUO service is responsible for vaccination throughout the province, so they travel biweekly to the hospitals of O Barco and Verín to avoid the displacement of patients. “Right now there is a doctor in O Barco who takes care of that, but we are going to Verín every two weeks,” Sande details.

Colombia e Indonesia

Last Thursday, among other travelers, the Santa María Nai attended a family that recently traveled to Colombia and a couple that will spend a month in Indonesia in summer. “We are going to Colombia because we have family there. You have to get several vaccinations, my son still did not have some ”, explains Juan Pérez, who accompanies his son Miguel. “It’s up to the memory dose of Hepatitis, the first one was given before the trip,” he adds. While the nurse prepared the dose, Miguel was calm: “The previous one didn’t hurt at all.”

Shortly after, a young couple entered the Preventive clinic: “We are going to Indonesia in about two weeks and we make an appointment so they can tell us if it is recommended that we get a vaccine beforehand.”
