Many companies are in desperate need of new staff. The number of unfilled vacancies remains high, which means that the labor market is still very tight. Many people are needed, especially in trade, business services and healthcare.
At the end of March there were 437,000 vacancies, the same number as at the end of the fourth quarter of last year. Most vacancies are open in trade (85,000), business services (71,000) and healthcare (67,000). Together, these three industries account for half of all open vacancies.
“The tightness on the labor market remains as great as ever,” says chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen of Statistics Netherlands. “Across the board, many people are needed. The labor market is not cooling down, there is no question of a turnaround.”
In the healthcare sector, 3,000 new vacancies were added and 67,000 vacancies were open at the end of the quarter. In culture, recreation and other services, the number increased to 14,000. There are 85,000 vacancies in the trade.
Unemployment fell slightly in the first quarter of this year by 2,000 to 357,000. Just like last quarter, this is 3.6 percent of the working population. The unemployed are people who do not have paid work, but have recently looked for one and are available in the short term.
