The Munich automaker delayed the launch of the more practical BMW M3 for a long time, now it is not enough to cover demand.
Sharp station wagons have been a hit for quite some time, and the Audi brand in particular knows its stuff. So when rumors first appeared that the BMW M division was preparing the iconic M3 in a more practical Touring body, it became clear to everyone that a competitor to the Audi RS4 Avant or the Mercedes-AMG C 63 Estate would be a hot commodity.
However, in a recent interview with Bimmer Today, Frank van Meel, head of the BMW M sports division, admitted that the public’s interest still surprised the automaker. The demand started pouring in immediately after the public premiere, which took place a year ago at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The automaker had to step up production at its Munich factory, but waiting times should still be quite long. But as we already know from the editorial test, this station wagon is really worth waiting for. However, the future could bring one more surprise.
In view of the high demand, there have been rumors since the beginning of the year that BMW M could expand the offer of the M3 Touring model by a lighter and more powerful version of the CS, which we know from the other body variants of the model.
A sharper version of the model could receive new components from the BMW M workshop that would improve aerodynamics, reduce weight and help the car better handle extreme stress. The supercharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine could then offer the same maximum output of 405 kW (550 hp) and 650 Nm of torque as in the sedan.
The idea of creating a BMW M3 CS Touring may sound tempting, but according to BMW Blog, this project has not yet received the green light for production. At the same time, the question of whether additional production capacities could be found for a sharper model can also play a role in the decision-making process.
