High Death Rate in the United States Compared to Other Wealthy Countries: Study Reveals Alarming Statistics

UNITED STATES

Unprecedented death rate far exceeds that of other wealthy countries

In 2021, 1.1 million deaths could have been avoided in the United States if the country had had a death rate similar to that of other rich countries, according to a new study led by a researcher from the School of Public Health in Boston University (BUSPH).

Published in the PNAS Nexus journal, the study refers to these excess deaths as “Lost Americans,” meaning that these people would still be alive if the death rate in the United States had been equal to that of peer countries.

Comparing death rates by age group in the United States and 21 other rich countries from 1933 to 2021, the authors find that death rates are much higher in the United States today than in other rich countries, and that the number of excess deaths in the United States has never been higher.

“The number of Americans lost in recent years is unprecedented in modern times,” said the study’s editor and corresponding author, Jacob Bor, BUSPH Global Health and Epidemiology Fellow.

Nearly 50% of those lost Americans died under age 65 in 2020 and 2021. According to Bor, the level of excess mortality among working-age adults is particularly high.
