Islamabad: The High Court of Pakistan overturned the 14-year prison sentence of Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister and leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party, in the Toshakhana case. The court has also canceled the imprisonment of Imran Khan’s wife. High Court Chief Justice Amir Farooq announced that the petitions against the sentence will be considered after the Eid holiday.
Imran and his wife were sentenced to 14 years in prison by an anti-corruption court in Islamabad.
Tosha Khana Department was established in Pakistan in 1974 to store the gifts and other expensive items received by rulers and officials. It is mandatory to report gifts and other materials received by persons to whom the Act applies to the Cabinet Division. And the gifts and things received by them should be handed over to Toshakhana. Only the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan are exempted from this. The President and Prime Minister can keep gifts worth less than 30,000 Pakistani Rupees. The case against Imran is that he sold the expensive gifts he received while he was the prime minister and made money. In August 2022, a case was filed against Imran by a politician named Muhsin Shahnawaz Ranja and some members of the Pakistani government.
