High costs for everything: the food bank lowers the threshold for the food package

Food banks look at the number of family members and at fixed income and costs.

A single parent with two children could initially qualify for a food package if less than € 450 per month remained for, for example, food and drink. This amount is now at 520 euros.

Lowering the threshold will likely mean more people will use the help offered by food banks, says the umbrella organization Food Banks Netherlands. It is not yet possible to predict how many more people will go to the food bank.

Enough food?

Food banks are also concerned that there is still enough food. Donors, including supermarket chains, provide less because they have taken measures against food waste. This leaves less for the food banks.

Last month, Food Banks Netherlands already announced the total number of people who have been harvesting food from the food bank over the past two months increased by about 10 percent.

This includes older people with an AOW allowance, who in the past could pay the fixed costs but are no longer able to do so.
