JAKARTA– Cholesterol is produced by the liver to help keep cells from being damaged and is involved in the production of hormones and vitamins.
But high Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), known as bad cholesterol, can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Eating some foods that contain cholesterol can be very safe, but because the body already makes all the cholesterol it needs, there is no need to seek additional cholesterol from food. In addition, experts recommend consuming as little cholesterol as possible.
When a person has too much LDL cholesterol in the body, it causes plaque to form which results in buildup on the walls of blood vessels. This buildup narrows the blood vessels, thereby blocking blood flow in the body and potentially causing health problems.
So here are some foods with high cholesterol that should be avoided.
1. Egg yolk
Egg yolks are known to have high cholesterol content when compared to other foods. 100 grams of egg yolk contains at least around 1200 milligrams of cholesterol or 400 percent more than the cholesterol needed every day.
2. Shrimp
Even though it is a low-fat food, it turns out that shrimp has a very high cholesterol content. Quoted from WebMD, one 4 ounce portion of shrimp contains 170 milligrams of cholesterol. That’s more than half the recommended daily intake.
3. Offal
Offal is rich in vitamins and nutrients making it an excellent part of many diets, but it is not suitable for people who want to reduce cholesterol levels.
4. Fast food
Fast food tends to be high in fat and most of it contains some type of animal product.
This can certainly have a bad impact on cholesterol levels in the body.
Quoted from WebMD, several studies have shown that eating regularly at fast food restaurants causes an increase in cholesterol. Fast food intake is a major risk factor for various chronic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
5. Processed meat
Processed meats such as sausages and bacon are high-cholesterol foods whose consumption should be limited. A medical review involving more than 614,000 participants linked each additional two-ounce (50 gram) serving of processed meat per day to a 42 percent higher risk of heart disease.
6. Fried foods
If possible, consumption of fried foods should be avoided because they contain high cholesterol.
This is because these foods are high in calories and may contain trans fats which can increase the risk of heart disease and other health problems. (source: detik.com)
