Many people are not aware of having high cholesterol problems due to heredity.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — To cholesterol high can be influenced by genetic factors. This condition is known as familial hypercholesterolemia. There are three physical changes that accompany it.
In familial hypercholesterolemia, a person can have high cholesterol levels despite adopting a healthy lifestyle. According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF), swelling that can occur in the area of the knuckles, knees, or the Achilles tendon at the back of the ankle can be a feature.
This condition is known as tendon xanthomata. The swelling may widen slowly over a period of several months.
The second sign that also triggers physical changes is xanthelasma. These are known as small cholesterol bumps that form in the inner corner of the eyelids. These lumps usually appear yellow in color.
The third sign is corneal arch. As stated by BHF, corneal arch This is a condition in which a pale white ring forms around the iris of the eye.
“If you are under 50 years old and have corneal arch“That’s a strong sign that you have familial hypercholesterolemia,” explains BHF Express, Monday (7/2/2022).
In the case of familial hypercholesterolemia, the mutated gene can be passed down from parents and children. This inherited gene makes it difficult for the liver to remove excess LDL cholesterol from the body.
This condition triggers the buildup of “bad” cholesterol in the bloodstream. High levels of bad cholesterol in the bloodstream can stick to the walls of blood vessels and narrow the cavities of blood vessels.
When that happens, the risk of heart and blood vessel disease can also increase. Gradually, the risk of heart attack and stroke will increase.
