Cholesterol High blood pressure includes peripheral arterial disease (PAD) which can occur when plaque builds up on artery walls. This will block blood flow in the arteries that supply blood to the kidneys, arms, stomach and legs.
Reporting from Express, Wednesday (10/27/2021) when this occurs symptoms such as cramps, and pain in the legs can appear.
“People don’t necessarily think that leg pain is related to heart disease. But if the leg arteries are blocked, chances are the coronary arteries are also blocked,” says vascular surgeon Dr Andy Lee.
“If left untreated, PAD has the potential to increase a person’s risk of suffering a stroke or heart attack. It is also a major cause of limb amputations.”

PAD is estimated to affect one in 20 people over age 50 and one in five people over age 70, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
Almost everyone who has PAD is unable to walk as far or as fast as before because of pain in the legs. Leg pain associated with PAD is known as claudication.
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, PAD is caused by narrowing or blockage of arteries in the legs or in the body’s main artery (aorta). This condition can reduce blood flow to the muscles in the calves, thighs, or buttocks.
Decreased blood flow can cause pain that leads to claudication. Blockage usually occurs due to narrowed and hardened arteries (atherosclerosis).
It is caused by a buildup of plaque within the arteries. Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances in the blood. This plaque buildup can also affect the arteries of the heart, causing chest pain or a heart attack.
