A study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health analyzed the relationship between serum lipids and low back pain.
The study involved adults between the ages of 40 and 64 who underwent annual health checks.
A total of 258,367 eligible participants were analyzed to investigate the association of low back pain with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio.

The study found that a low HDL-C ratio and a high LDL-C/HDL-C ratio were significantly associated with low back pain indicating that pain felt in the back could indicate high cholesterol levels.
