Hiddad Malware Resurfaces: Android Threats on the Rise Again

Hiddad has been terrorizing Android mobile devices since last year, regularly appearing at the top of the list of the most widespread malicious codes. In January, however, it seemed that the ground collapsed after him, he did not make it into the top ten monitored threats at all.

In the spring, however, he began to gain strength again. It saw the greatest rise in May, when its share among other threats jumped from 26.54% in April to 49.94%.

Decline and re-increase in detections

At the end of the summer, however, its share began to decline sharply, in June it was only 22.19%. However, during the holidays, computer pirates became more active again, in July Hiddad was already worth 29.93% and in the past month even for 31.55%.

It is therefore evident that users should beware of this pest, as its share is starting to increase again. At the same time, other threats usually only have a share in percentage units. “The Hiddad malware has regularly alternated with the Andreed adware at the top of the regular statistics in recent months. Even with the Andreed adware, we observed an increase in the number of detections at the beginning of last summer,” noted Martin Jirkal, head of the analytical team at Eset’s Prague branch.

Hiddad hides in fake versions of games such as Block Sun Earth and Block Crazy Robo World. These titles are reminiscent of Minecraft, where players build worlds using different parts and cubes. Users thus let the uninvited visitor into the device themselves when they install the aforementioned games.

Hiddad’s main function is to serve ads, but it can also gain access to key security information contained in the operating system, allowing an attacker to obtain sensitive user data.

Trojanized applications

At first glance, trojanized applications are normal and legitimate games or various tools, but their task is to spread malicious code. “Most often, their authors offer them on various Internet repositories and warez forums, where users are looking for free alternatives to otherwise paid games in official stores or on developer websites,” explained Jirkal.

Therefore, users can defend themselves against this malicious code relatively easily. Just don’t download apps from unknown and dubious sources. In the event that an uninvited visitor has already taken up residence in a tablet or smartphone, most mobile antivirus programs should be able to deal with it, including free ones.

How to protect mobile phones and tablets?

Cyber threats are also increasingly affecting mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Few people bother with the security of these devices. That is why hackers attack mobile devices more and more often.

It is therefore very important to protect tablets and smartphones with antivirus programs and other security tools not only for PCs, but also for smartphones. Special programs can protect against such uninvited guests. In addition to classic antiviruses, these are, for example, applications that focus only on spyware and the search for Trojan horses.

Only one security program of its kind should be installed on a mobile phone or tablet at a time. Two antiviruses on a disk can do some nice mischief. However, antivirus alone is not a guarantee of safety.

Updates are also very important, because computer hackers very often use errors in the operating system and various programs to sneak in uninvited visitors.
