As is well known, derbies have their own rules – and sometimes completely different halves of the game. On Saturday evening, HG Amberg turned around a five-goal deficit at halftime in the handball district league in a duel with HSG Nabburg-Schwarzenfeld and turned it into a 33:28 (13:18) home win.
The prestigious duel between the old rivals attracted numerous spectators to the GMG triple gym, who were expected to be thoroughly entertained. Until the score was 8:8 in the 18th minute, the game was on equal footing. Then guest keeper Florian Sturm should become more and more of a factor. The HSG also cleverly and successfully attacked the home team’s double attack-defense transition, which had to keep breaking down more and more. The 13:18 deficit at the break was a big problem.
HG coach Christof Heiduk reminded his team in the dressing room speech that they had already played this big game in the first leg draw and made a few changes after the restart. In the attack, the release to the second circle worked brilliantly. Julian Schaller (10 goals) and Leonhard Schatz (7) found the almost optimal mix of top-class shots of their own and passes to the circle in the backcourt.
Sturm cleared his box, but successor Daniel Fuhrmann hardly put a hand on the ball. Encouraged by the strong offensive performance, the defense around the self-sacrificing captain Paul Rössle also shone. Keeper Jakob Keiner, who came on as a substitute during the first half, played an important role with numerous saves. Overall, the second half was an untypical derby affair for the Vilsstadt team, who were able to celebrate a 33:28 victory.
“I’m very proud of the boys, how they made up for the significant half-time deficit and played themselves into a frenzy,” said Heiduk, happy about the success. The trainer also gave a big compliment to the spectators, who played a big role. “Those were very important points, because in the crazy league there will still be a lot of fighting for the last relegation place due to the sliding relegation from the regional league. That’s why it’s important that we maintained our strength at home,” said Heiduk. The current fourth place with 19:11 points is therefore a nice snapshot, but by no means a resting place.
“It has never been as easy to win in Amberg as it is today. However, what we delivered in the second half was district league mediocre and not district league level,” HSG goalkeeper Florian Sturm said angrily after the points were wasted.
