Hezbollah’s new leader is presumed dead in an Israeli airstrike

Smoke rises from an Israeli airstrike on the outskirts of Beirut, Lebanon. In this area, fighting continues between Israel and the pro-Iranian armed group Hezbollah. Photo = Yonhap News Hashim Safieddin, the new leader of Hezbollah, an armed group opposed to Iran in Lebanon, is expected to have died in an Israeli airstrike.

According to China’s official Xinhua News Agency, Israel’s state-run broadcaster Kan reported on the 4th (local time) that Safieddin was presumed dead, citing senior Israeli government officials. It is known that Safieddin was under an underground structure that was bombed by Israel and it is highly unlikely that he survived.

The New York Times previously reported that three anonymous Israeli officials said that the Israeli military launched an air strike targeting Safieddin, who was meeting with senior Hezbollah leaders in an underground bunker. However, the Times of Israel (TOI) reported that it is not yet clear whether Safieddin is alive or dead.

Hashim Safieddin is Nasrallah’s cousin and became the new leader of Hezbollah after Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the 27th of last month.
