Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Hezbollah’s second highest leader gives latest warning. The powerful Iran-backed militia in Lebanon says Israel’s killing of civilians in Gaza risks leading to a wider war in the Middle East.

In an interview at BBC International, Sheikh Naim Qassem said the current developments are very serious and dangerous. According to him, nothing can stop its impact in the future.

“The danger is real,” he stressed, quoted Thursday (9/11/2023).

“Because Israel is increasing its aggression against civilians and killing more women and children. Is it possible for this to continue and escalate, without bringing any real danger to the region? I don’t think so,” he added in an interview in Beirut.

He emphasized that any escalation would be related to Israeli actions. Every possibility, he said, must have a response.

It should be noted that Hezbollah itself is the largest political and military force in Lebanon. However, Britain, the United States (US) and the Arab League classified it as a terrorist organization.

So far, Hezbollah has responded to the war in Gaza with warnings. The group is said to be carefully calibrating its actions.

When an Israeli strike killed a woman and three children in southern Lebanon on Sunday, Hezbollah used Grad rockets for the first time in the conflict. This later killed an Israeli civilian.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, threatened that every civilian death in Lebanon would result in another death across the border. But he did not threaten Israel with “all-out war.”

Not just October 7th

In the interview, Sheikh Naim Qassem also emphasized how the Israeli and Palestinian problems did not only occur on October 7. He called the attack an unavoidable response to Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

“Why don’t we see what Israel has done in Gaza,” he said.

“They killed civilians and destroyed houses,” he added.

Previously in 1948, the UN made resolution 181. The global organization then adopted dividing Palestine into two countries and one international territory, the state of Palestine, Israel and the region of Jerusalem.

However, this has never been realized. War even increasingly became between the two regions.

The Oslo Accords in 1993 also attempted mediation. The Palestinian Authority, PLO recognized Israel under a two-state solution and effectively signed an agreement giving Israel control of 60% of the West Bank, as well as most of the land and water resources in the region.

The agreement would supposedly provide the first elected Palestinian government, running an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with its capital in East Jerusalem. But the promise of an agreement never materialized.

Global Companies’ Biggest Threat – Strait of Hormuz Closes

Previously, wars taking place in a number of regions of the world – including Gaza – have become the focus of attention of CEOs of large companies today. This was stated by the director of the Atlantic Council foreign policy think tank, Frederick Kempe, in the CNBC Global Evolve business dialogue, last week.

In detail, he explained, the first four years of the last decade had caused external shocks. Starting from the Covid-19 incident, the withdrawal of US troops in Afghanistan which then weakened the US position in the world.

Not to mention, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. And, finally, the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas.

“Every CEO, every bank I talk to, is taking geopolitics into their thinking in a way they didn’t five years ago,” he said.

“No one is saying it won’t impact business. … Geopolitics are starting to enter the boardroom in a way I’ve never experienced before,” he added.

In other reports, widening war could disrupt the Strait of Hormuz. These waters are the world’s most important oil transit point, through which about a fifth of global oil production flows every day.

The most important concern is Israeli retaliation against Iran, which is the source of the proxies’ funds and weapons. According to recent Bank of America predictions, Iran could close the strait, pushing oil prices to above U$250 per barrel.
