The head of the powerful Lebanese armed group Hezbollah said residents of northern Israel will not be able to return to their homes for the start of the next school year if their government continues its assault on the Gaza Strip.
Hezbollah has been exchanging fire with the Israeli army along Lebanon’s southern border for months. The group says it fires rockets into Israel both to support its Palestinian ally Hamas and to prevent Israel from launching an attack on Lebanon.
In his televised speech today, Sayed Hassan Nasrallah reiterated that his organization will fight as long as the Israeli attack on Gaza continues.
“The connection of the supportive Lebanese front and Gaza is definitive. No one will be able to disconnect” the two, he added.
The clashes have displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border and there are fears of a wider war between the two heavily armed rivals. Israel says it wants to ensure northerners return home, either through a negotiated deal or a military strike against Lebanon. The families had hoped to return by Sept. 1, when the new school year begins.
Nasrallah addressed the displaced on Friday, telling them: “if you want the issue resolved, go to your government and tell it to stop the war in Gaza.”
