Hezbollah reports “violent fighting” against Israelis in southern Lebanon

After almost a year of cross-border clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, an ally of the Palestinian Hamas movement, the Israeli army intensified its bombing in Lebanon on September 23 and a week later launched a ground offensive.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility this Monday for a rocket bombardment against a naval base near Haifa, in northern Israel, and a barracks near Netanya, a coastal town north of Tel Aviv.

The pro-Iranian Shiite movement reported that its militants are facing Israeli forces in “violent battles” in the Lebanese town of Aita al Shaab, near the border.

In northern Lebanon, the Red Cross reported that 18 people were killed in an Israeli bombing raid on Aito, a town in a predominantly Christian mountain region that had never been attacked before, as operations are usually directed against Hezbollah strongholds.

An Afp photographer saw human remains in front of the building, located at the entrance to the town and which was completely destroyed.

The Israeli army, meanwhile, said it intercepted projectiles coming from Lebanon in the center of the country, and also two drones approaching from Syria.

After having weakened Hamas in Gaza, Israel shifted the bulk of its operations to Lebanon, and claims that the objective is to allow the return of some 60,000 Israelis displaced from the north of the country by the Islamist group’s shell fire.

These operations, which began on September 23, have since left more than 1,300 dead in Lebanon, according to an AFP count, and nearly 700,000 displaced, according to the UN.
