Financial Associated Press, November 4 (Editor Malan) The situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has eased slightly. On Friday, Lebanese Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah announced in a public speech that he was suspending a broader conflict with Israel.

Nasrallah pointed out that the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7 was the trigger for the current situation, but the operation was carried out without the knowledge of both Hezbollah and Iran.

However, he also pointed out that there are concerns that the situation on the Lebanese front could escalate and lead to a wider war in the Middle East. This concern is possible and Israel must keep it in mind.

More than 70 people have died in Lebanon in more frequent border clashes with Israel since Israel retaliated against Gaza. The victims were mostly Hezbollah fighters but also civilians and journalists. Israel said that six Israeli soldiers and one civilian died in the conflict with Hezbollah.

Before Nasrallah’s speech, many observers in the Lebanese region were worried that the situation between Hezbollah and Israel would further deteriorate, but Nasrallah’s statement relieved some of the concerns.

Nicholas Blanford, an expert at the Atlantic Council in Beirut, said that for many Lebanese, they may have received some form of assurance that the region would not descend into all-out war.

In his speech, Nasrallah hinted that the Israeli military would continue to be contained, but that Hamas would need to fight for victory on its own. But he also pointed out that if the situation in Gaza escalates, the situation on the Lebanese border will also heat up.

Blansford interpreted Nasrallah to mean that Gaza remains the main front against Israel and the Lebanese border is only a secondary front. This was his response to criticism from some Hamas leaders that Hezbollah was not doing enough. But Nasrallah is obviously unwilling to provide any guarantee to Israel or the United States to avoid escalation of the conflict.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel on Friday hoping to broker a humanitarian moratorium on bombings in Gaza and provide emergency fuel support to Gaza.

But so far, Israel has not stopped its ground operations in Gaza and even attacked an ambulance team outside a hospital, killing at least 15 people. Israeli President Netanyahu also stated after meeting with Blinken that there would be no temporary ceasefire.

The United States does not support a ceasefire but emphasizes a humanitarian pause, noting that the release of hostages would also require a pause in the conflict, according to U.S. sources familiar with the situation. A U.S. official also said that the United States has made recommendations to Israel to change its air strike strategy in the coming days and conduct more ground campaigns to clear Hamas’s underground tunnel network.
