Israel says it wants to neutralize Hezbollah in southern Lebanon to allow the return of some 60,000 northern residents of its territory, displaced by the Lebanese movement’s incessant rocket fire since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
Hezbollah began the shooting in solidarity with Palestinian Hamas, which on October 7 last year carried out a massive attack on southern Israel.
Since hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah led to open conflict on September 23, at least 1,940 people have died in Lebanon, according to a count by the AFP news agency based on official data.
