Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell recently fueled speculation about a potential collaboration wiht Metallica frontman James Hetfield, revealing a history of informal jams and mutual respect. The two rock legends have a history of musical crossovers, including Cantrell’s guest appearance on Metallica’s 1998 cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Tuesday’s Gone” for their Garage Inc. album. Beyond that, they’ve shared stages at various benefit concerts over the years.
In a recent interview, Cantrell addressed the possibility of a full-fledged collaboration, stating, “James and I have talked about it, kind of. We never had a formal conversation but I’ve jammed with him at Kirk [Hammett,Metallica guitarist]’s place. I’ve even spent a night or two at his house, and we’ve ended up with guitars in the kitchen and on the porch. It’s something I’d be really curious about, even to just write a song with him. As for whether it’d turn into something more than that, he’s got a pretty demanding day job.Ha ha! So I’d understand if it never comes to be.”
Cantrell’s admiration for Hetfield extends beyond casual collaborations. He has previously praised Hetfield’s stage presence and enduring influence on the rock and metal world. “what makes James such a great frontman is his physical presence,” Cantrell explained. “Nobody else commands the same kind of respect and attention without it being self-seeking or egocentric.he’s all about the music; all about the fun and the party and the connection with the fans. And that to me is really inspiring. Especially as he’s done this for so long, and he’s been at the top of his game for so long and he continues to search for a deeper meaning.”
The guitarist went on to solidify his high regard for Hetfield, adding, “Will he go down in history as a rock icon? He already has – he’s the godfather, man.”
While a full-blown collaborative album remains uncertain due to Hetfield’s busy schedule, the possibility of a future song or project between thes two titans of rock and metal continues to excite fans. Cantrell’s recent solo album, I Want Blood, is available now. For more from Jerry Cantrell, check out the latest issue of Metal Hammer.

Jerry cantrell On James Hetfield Collaboration: “It’d Be a Dream Come True”
Rock fans went into a frenzy this week after Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell hinted at a potential collaboration with Metallica frontman James Hetfield. The two metal icons have a history of jamming together adn mutual admiration, but could a full-fledged project be on the horizon?
To delve deeper into this exciting possibility, we spoke with renowned music journalist and Metallica expert, Steven Gain, to get his take on the situation and what it could mean for the future of heavy metal.
###
the Rumor Mill is Turning: What are Your Thoughts on a Potential Cantrell/Hetfield Collab?
Steven Gain: It’s a tantalizing prospect, isn’t it? Both Cantrell and Hetfield are titans of the genre, each with their unique style and songwriting sensibilities. Imagine the intensity of Hetfield’s vocals combined with Cantrell’s signature dark and melodic riffs. It would be a true meeting of heavy metal minds.
Definitely gets the heavy metal heart racing, though knowing how busy both musicians are, it might be a long shot.
Cantrell Mentioned Informal Jams at Kirk Hammett’s House – Any insight on That Front?
Gain: It’s no secret that the Metallica guys are close with Cantrell. They’ve shared the stage numerous times at benefit concerts, and Cantrell even contributed to Metallica’s “Garage Inc.” album. It wouldn’t be surprising if these jam sessions were more frequent than we think. Could these casual hangouts be where the seeds of a more formal collaboration were sown? It’s certainly possible.
what Kind of Music do you think These Two Would Create Together?
Gain:
Hard to say for sure, but I think we’d see a darker, more introspective sound. Both Cantrell and Hetfield are capable of writng incredibly heavy riffs, but they also excel at crafting emotionally resonant lyrics. I imagine a project where the heaviness wouldn’t be just about volume, but about the raw power of the emotions they convey.
Think something with the grit of Alice in Chains meeting the anthemic energy of Metallica – a truly unique and captivating soundscape.

Gain:
It’s exciting to think about the possibilities.A
Cantrell/Hetfield collaboration would be a monumental event for heavy metal fans worldwide. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they find the time to make it happen. The music world needs this.
