The campaign against break-ins during the summer holidays leads to the arrests of alleged serial perpetrators. Video recordings from the S-Bahn helped the investigators.
The thieves took advantage of the night, came mainly through tilted windows: In Frankfurter-Zeilsheim, burglaries increased between May 6 and June 26. The perpetrators could be convicted by means of video recordings from an S-Bahn. Helpful here: the two accused had bought the tickets with a credit card that had previously been stolen during a break-in, one of them carried a shoulder bag that had been stolen that night.
There were a total of four perpetrators who went to the police in their summer campaign against break-ins. Hesse’s Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU) has now presented the balance sheet: four arrests and 650 controls.
Last year, burglaries in Hesse fell by ten percent. Nevertheless, the police continued the fight against the thieves “at a high level,” said the minister. “Burglars don’t go on summer vacation. That is why we intensify the pressure to persecute potential perpetrators every year, especially during the holiday season. “
In the apartment of the two perpetrators from Zeilsheim, the police seized numerous objects of value as well as the crime clothes. One of the accused is accused of being responsible for twelve acts in Frankfurt and for at least 30 burglaries in the area of the police headquarters in Southeast Hesse.
More than 30 break-ins
The two other arrested men are charged with more than 30 home burglaries. The duo is said to have been active in Dietzenbach, Heusenstamm, Offenbach and Rodgau since December: always in the early morning hours.
Due to the unusual times of the crime and the use of the same technology, the police assume the same perpetrators. In several of the break-ins, the two were recorded by video security cameras. Again, thanks to this technology, the police were able to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
As Beuth added, the police organized around 20 prevention events on the subject as part of the campaign – despite the corona pandemic. She also provided information about burglary protection via the media, social media and in personal conversations.
The minister said that the conditions for perpetrators were particularly favorable during the holiday season. Burglaries mostly occurred during the day, especially when residents were absent for a long period. Indications for this are overcrowded mailboxes, closed shutters or permanently parked vehicles. Criminals also used vacation photos in social networks or out-of-office messages on private e-mail accounts to locate apartments and houses.
