Hesse: Hundreds of fish die in Bad Sooden-Allendorf

Hundreds of fish have died in a pond near Bad Sooden-Allendorf. The reason: a lack of oxygen caused by the heat in August. The city is warning of odor nuisance.

It is a sad sight: Hundreds of perch, eels and roach have died in a pond near Bad Sooden-Allendorf (Werra-Meißner). The city’s Facebook page states: “Unfortunately, the lake is closed due to acute fish mortality. There may be unpleasant smells.” Around 600 kilos of dead fish have already been disposed of.

According to the volunteer fire department and the responsible fishing club, the reason for the fish deaths is an acute lack of oxygen. It is probably a result of the heat in August and the dense tree cover around the lake. This prevented the wind from circulating the water surface and thus bringing new oxygen into the pond. Water pumps are now supposed to help.

Aeration devices will now bring oxygen into the pond.

Fire brigade already in action

The Kleinvach volunteer fire department has already taken measures to counteract the lack of oxygen – using portable pumps and pipes, as they wrote on Facebook. The work is expected to last until the end of the week.
