Strangeness of the living: this extremely rare shark can project its jaw forward
The Xenomorph from the Alien film series is a mythical creature of cinema. It is the result of several inspirations straight from the animal world. It was the protactile jaw of sharks, like that of the goblin shark (Mitsukurina owstoni), that inspired the creature’s designers for its second jaw. But there is another species of small shark, lurking in the depths of the Pacific, which is also able to project its jaw forward. In addition, its appearance is as frightening as that of the Xenomorph. Only a handful of individuals of the species Trigonognathus kabeyai have been recovered to date, off the coasts of Japan, Taiwan and Hawaii. Suffice to say that scientists do not know much about this shark which does not measure more than thirty centimeters. It is also the only one of the genus Trigonognathus. According to the meager information available, it would appear that Trigonognathus kabeyai participates in the vertical migration after dark to feed in surface waters. Its protactile jaw and needle-thin teeth allow it to gobble up prey, crustaceans and other fish in one piece. In 2018, Taiwanese fishermen lifted five specimens of this nightmarish shark from the waters. An extraordinary catch which allowed to know more about its distribution since it was the first time that Trigonognathus kabeyai was observed in the region. Taiwan News (@TW_nextmedia) January 10, 2018
