Hervé Lorant: Wood Sculptor Perpetuating the Tradition of Breton Wedding Spoons in Cornwall

Hervé is a wood sculptor in Plomodiern but runs a shop in Locronan. Self-taught, this former computer scientist has been sculpting wedding spoons for several years, an old tradition specific to Breton Cornwall and which he helps to perpetuate.

Reportage

Herve Lorant sculpts wedding spoons, a tradition specific to the Cornwall which dates back to the 18th century. LAt weddings the whole village was invited and people had to come with their own wooden cutlery. The latter reflected social belonging: simple for the less wealthy or sculpted for others, even folding.

Encounter

Fañch Le Henaff, graphic designer and co-author of “Locronan, la Troménie and the painters” released last year, evokes this procession which takes place every 6 years. It has its origins in the time of the Druids. It was then taken up by Saint Ronan who made it a Christian festival.

In the rearview mirror

Locronan has inspired painters but also directors. Several of them installed their cameras on site to shoot historical films. Little retro in pictures…
