Hertha BSC Secures First Away Win in Second Division Against Holstein Kiel

In a hectic final phase, Hertha BSC secured their first away win in the second division. Fabian Reese, of all people, scored the decisive goal in the game against his former club Holstein Kiel to make it 3-2 (2-0) for the Berliners. The striker scored from a penalty kick in the second minute of added time. Four minutes earlier, Haris Tabaković had also failed with a penalty kick against Holstein keeper Timon Weiner. Shortly before the end, Marvin Schulz from Kiel saw a yellow-red card.

Hertha had previously lost a 2-0 lead at the break. Smail Prevljak (27th) and Andreas Bouchalakis (39th) shot the guests into the lead in front of 15,034 spectators. But in the second half, the Kiel team pulled themselves together and equalized with a penalty kick from Benedikt Pichler (54th) and Steven Skrzybski (57th).

Hertha improved to ninth place with its second win in a row. By missing the win, the Kiel team missed the chance to move to the top of the table and are now in seventh place.

Düsseldorf at the top

Hannover 96 narrowly missed out on top of the table. Despite a strong performance and an early lead, the Lower Saxony team only played 1-1 (1-0) in the top game against leaders Fortuna Düsseldorf. If they had won, Stefan Leitl’s team would have jumped to first place.

In front of 35,444 spectators in the Düsseldorf Arena, Cedric Teuchert (7th) scored the goal to make it 1-0 for Hannover in the early stages. The Greek newcomer Christos Tzolis saved Fortuna’s lead in the table when he scored with a penalty kick in the 58th minute to make it 1-1. The Rhinelanders will now travel to the next top game at Hamburger SV on Friday (6.30 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the 2nd Bundesliga and on Sky), one point ahead of the competition.

A week after the 7-0 win against VfL Osnabrück, the Hanoverians continued their strong form. Teuchert scored his seventh goal of the season. The 26-year-old missed a great chance shortly before half-time when he was denied by Düsseldorf’s good keeper Florian Kastenmeier.

Three points for Kaiserslautern

In front of over 40,000 spectators in the Fritz Walter Stadium, 1. FC Kaiserslautern continued its winning streak. The team defeated Hansa Rostock 3:1 (2:1) and is now unbeaten in six competitive games. This meant that coach Dirk Schuster’s team improved to fourth place in the table.

The 2-1 half-time score thanks to goals from Tobias Raschl (3rd minute) and Kevin Kraus (17th) and Junior Brumado on the Rostock side (29th) was extremely flattering for the guests from the Baltic Sea. Kaiserslautern had a very strong performance, but missed numerous good scoring opportunities in front of 40,450 fans.

After the restart, Rostock was able to make the game noticeably more open. The Palatinate team now had to do a lot more defensive work. Juan Perea, the Colombian loanee from VfB Stuttgart, missed the best opportunities to equalize in the 68th and 76th minutes.

On the other side, Daniel Hanslik and Jan Elvedi were unable to capitalize on a double chance (82′). But a minute later, FCK striker Ragnar Ache made it 3-1 with his sixth goal of the season.
