Hertha BSC – VfL Bochum 1:1 (0:0)
Hertha BSC is the first team to be relegated to the Bundesliga and has to go into second division for the seventh time in the club’s history. Against VfL Bochum, the Berliners were unable to get beyond a 1-1 (0-0) result thanks to a goal by Bochum’s Keven Schlotterbeck in injury time (90+4) and can therefore take the two direct relegation zones on the last day of the game next Saturday no longer left at VfL Wolfsburg. Bochum, on the other hand, still has a good chance of staying in the class as 15th. A goal by Hertha’s Dodi Lukebakio (17th) was taken back by the intervention of the video assistant (VAR) because of a foul by Stevan Jovetic on Ivan Ordets. In the second half, Hertha coach Pal Dardai’s team took a 1-0 lead (64′) with a header from Lucas Tousart after a corner kick. VfL hit the post with a deflected shot from Schlotterbeck (87′). Chidera Ejuke also hit the post for Hertha (90′). In stoppage time, Schlotterbeck then shocked the home side.
Schalke 04 – Eintracht Frankfurt 2: 2 (1: 1)
Schalke 04 must continue to worry about staying up. In the home game against Eintracht Frankfurt, the Royal Blues did not get more than 2: 2 (1: 1), but jumped up to 15th place at least until Sunday, when VfB Stuttgart can overtake Mainz 05 with a win. On the last day of the game, S04 coach Thomas Reis’ team will travel to RB Leipzig on Saturday. The suspended Simon Terodde and Moritz Jenz, who received their fifth yellow card against Frankfurt, will then be absent. In the first minute, Terodde headed the ball for Schalke’s 1-0 lead, which Daichi Kamada equalized to make it 1-1 (21′). The goal stood up to scrutiny because a game by Christopher Lenz against Cedric Brunner was not counted as a foul in the making. In the second half, Eintracht turned the game around with a goal from defender Tuta (59′). Sebastian Polter saved S04 at least one point with his 2:2 equalizer (85th). The Hessians stay bottom of the table and keep the chance of another European Cup qualification open with the win.
TSG Hoffenheim – Union Berlin 4:2 (2:1)
Thanks to a surprising 3-2 (2-1) home win against Union Berlin, TSG Hoffenheim took a huge step towards staying up in the league. Ihlas Bebou (22nd) scored the opening goal for coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s courageous home team. Andrej Kramaric (36th) added the second goal with a penalty kick. Union scored a goal shortly before the break through Danilho Doekhi (45+4). Despite a stronger second half, the Berliners failed to score. Kramaric (89th) finally made everything clear, the Union goal from Aïssa Laïdouni (90th + 5) came too late. Munas Dabbour (90 + 9) put the final point. TSG, which theoretically can still be overtaken by Bochum, Stuttgart and Augsburg, is practically saved in 13th because of the significantly better goal difference, Union has to worry about entering the Champions League in fourth place. Coach Urs Fischer’s team is level on points with fifth-placed Freiburg before the last matchday, but they have a goal difference that is five goals better.
Werder Bremen – 1. FC Cologne 1: 1 (0: 1)
Werder Bremen is finally saved by the 1:1 (0:1) in the home game against 1. FC Köln and can no longer slip to the relegation place. Coach Ole Werner’s team also has to thank the competition in the relegation battle. Romano Schmid (73) equalized the opening goal from Stefan Tigges (36′) in the second half. Both Cologne (tenth) and Werder (twelfth) are in no man’s land in the table.
