Eduard Löwen (25) is leaving Hertha BSC after his loan to VfL Bochum and moving to the newly founded St. Louis CITY SC in Major League Soccer. As the US club reported, the midfielder signed a contract until 2026 with an option for a further year. Transfermarkt.us first reported on an impending transfer. “Sky” meanwhile mentions a transfer fee of around one million euros plus possible bonuses that Hertha will receive for Löwen.
The former U21 national player made the leap to the pros in 2016 at 1. FC Nürnberg before Hertha paid 7 million euros for him in the summer of 2019. In the capital, the right-footed player has so far hardly been able to meet expectations and has only played 14 games. A loan to FC Augsburg in the second half of 2019/20 was followed by his best season last season with 28 appearances and seven goals (three goals/four assists) for Bochum. His contract in Berlin would have expired in 2024.

At St. Louis CITY SC led by sports director Lutz Pfannenstiel, Löwen is the sixth permanent transfer – five of them from the Bundesliga. In addition to BVB keeper Roman Bürki (31), Joakim Nilsson (28; Arminia Bielefeld), João Klauss (25; TSG Hoffenheim) and Tomas Ostrak (22; 1. FC Köln) are also moving to Missouri. Since the club will not start in the MLS until 2023, the newcomers will initially play for the reserves in the MLS Next Pro in the coming season.
“We are happy that we were able to win such a good player for our team in Eduard,” said Pfannenstiel. “The experience he has already gained at his age will be crucial for our team and he will bring structure and strategy to our midfield centre. His physical attributes and leadership qualities are two strong factors why he fits perfectly into our DNA. Eduard is a box-to-box player and an important building block for the backbone of our team.”
