After years of planning, Hydro-Quebec is finally specifying the route that the new high-voltage line will take in Quebec to be built to allow its electricity to be delivered to New York City.

The underground route, worth a hundred million dollars, will extend over 56.1 km between the Hertel substation in La Prairie and Lacolle, where a 1.6 km submarine segment will start under the Richelieu River. , where Hydro will connect to the US grid.
The amount of this work, which is due to start in spring 2023, has not been disclosed. But, according to our sources, it would be around a hundred million dollars. On the American side, the construction of 545 km of underground and sub-river lines will require investments of US $ 4 billion.
In total, eight municipalities will be affected by the construction of the Quebec section. In addition to La Prairie and Lacolle, there are the municipalities of Saint-Philippe, Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur, Saint-Édouard, Saint-Patrice-de-Sherrington, Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville and Saint-Bernard-de- Glue.
From the Hertel substation, the route follows a series of rows and paths crossing the municipalities of Saint-Philippe and Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur (rang Saint-Raphaël, rang Saint-Claude, Montée Signer, rang Saint -Marc, the route Édouard-VII and the Montée Saint-Jacques).
However, it will partly cross that of ancestral lands, three times larger, known as the Seigneurie de Sault-Saint-Louis, granted in 1680.
From St-Jacques-le-Mineur, the route will then follow the right-of-way of the A-15 motorway for nearly 24 km to route 202, in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle. The last section will then follow Ranges St-Georges and Edgerton, and Fairbanks Creek to the Richelieu River, which flows into Lake Champlain.
In total, the line will take the right-of-way of provincial and municipal roads for 29 km, that of the A-15 for 24 km and agricultural land for 3 km, maintains Hydro.
If all goes as planned, this line will allow, from 2025, to transport 1,250 megawatts (MW) of energy, the equivalent of the needs of a million households in the United States.
To compensate for the passage of the line on granted ancestral lands, formerly known as Seignerie de Sault-Saint-Louis, Hydro-Québec has established a partnership with the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà: ke.
Details of this partnership have still not been disclosed. We have limited ourselves to saying so far that once the line is in service, the community will be able to benefit from “economic benefits for a period of 40 years”.
