The eyes are susceptible to many viruses, but herpes is especially dangerous. The ophthalmologist Natalya Ploshchanskaya told Klops how the disease affects the organs of vision.
Herpes is activated in the human body at a time when immunity is lower, for example, during illness or stress. In some cases, the disease can go along the fibers of the trigeminal nerve, that is, not on the third finger on the lip, but on the first one – to the eye, the doctor explained.
In this case, rashes in the form of bubbles appear on the skin of the eyelids, mucous membranes and even on the nose,” said the doctor.
People who use contact lenses should be especially careful. Those who violate hygiene rules are also at risk.
“In the sub-lens area, the conditions are moist and warm, just right for the proliferation of bacteria and viruses. Therefore, you need to wash your hands more often and not to contact those who sneeze,” said the ophthalmologist.
Any infection that causes inflammation in the nose can arise through the tear ducts or enter the eyelid through contact. According to Ploshchanskaya, if you rub your nose and then scratch your eye, or if someone sneezes or coughs on you, this can cause conjunctivitis.
“People with contact lenses should remember that they are at risk of eye diseases,” concluded the ophthalmologist.
