The pictures from Geseke moved the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia on Sunday (September 10th). In the afternoon, a freight train loaded with cement derailed in the middle of the residential area. Any help would come too late for the train driver (†30) (more here).
It is still unclear how the fatal train accident in Geseke could have happened. A video that the police have and is circulating online shows the dramatic seconds shortly before the accident. After seeing the footage, experts are now paying homage to the train driver who died in the accident as a hero.
Geske (NRW): Railway workers trust their colleagues
“The Railwayman” said goodbye to the 30-year-old train driver on Facebook with emotional words: “We remember the wonderful moments we experienced together, and you will always remain in our hearts – as a sincere, humorous colleague and loyal friend (…) You will leave a painful void, my friend.”

Under the impression of the video, the expert paid homage to his colleagues for their courage in the situation shortly before the accident. The images show how the 30-year-old climbed over the car despite the train’s high speed. According to the expert’s assessment, he tried to open the main air line. With the courage of desperation, he apparently tried to stop the train. “Although he unfortunately failed to do so, his heroic actions demonstrate the true character of a hero who cares about the safety of both those around him and those in the immediate vicinity of the tracks,” said “The Railroader.”

Why did the train derail?
The police also have the video sequence. A spokesman for the Soest police confirmed to DER WESTEN that the recordings show the train driver being on the train shortly before the accident. At first it was unclear whether it was the train driver, which is why a helicopter was used to search for a possible second victim. “We now assume with almost certainty that the person in the video is the train driver,” said the police spokesman.

Whether the 30-year-old actually wanted to cause an emergency brake on the locomotive and what caused the train to derail is the subject of the investigation. Among other things, the tachograph still needs to be evaluated to find out whether the train was possibly too fast. And if so: why? Shortly after the accident, investigators said they could neither rule out a technical defect nor human error.
