Hero of the religious right must succeed hero of the progressive left in Supreme Court

Barrett also has displayed very conservative views. She spoke out for the right to carry firearms, also for people with criminal records. In the case of a man convicted of fraud, Barrett found it unconstitutional to take his firearms from him because there was no evidence that he was violent.

In addition, Barrett has supported President Trump in his anti-immigration policy. In Illinois, she was positive about a law that would prevent immigrants who are likely to have recourse to state aid in the future from obtaining permanent residency.

Barrett was born in New Orleans and studied law at Notre Dame University in Indiana. She later also taught there. Early in her career, Barrett was the legal assistant to Conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. In 2017, Trump nominated her as a Judge on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

During the Senate hearings prior to the vote on that appointment, Barrett was overthrown about her Catholic background. She was asked about the death penalty, which would go against her beliefs as a Catholic, and about her abortion ideology. Barrett said: “I want to emphasize that my religious beliefs do not play a role in the performance of my duties as a judge.” After that hearing, she was seen as a hero in religious-conservative circles, who was treated unfairly because of her religious background.

Colleagues from Notre Dame University praise her as a “brilliant lawyer” and “astute scholar”. She graduated summa cum laude. As a judge, she is known as so-called originalist, just like Antonin Scalia. This means that she tries to interpret the constitution as much as possible as Americans did when the constitution was written. That makes her popular with conservatives.

Barrett is a member of the People of Praise with her husband. This is an originally Catholic community that maintains customs that normally occur in Evangelical churches, such as faith healing and speaking in tongues. A believer prays in language that is incomprehensible to others. The couple have seven children, two of whom are adopted from Haiti. One of their children has Down syndrome.
