Hero Lai Mengchuan Rescues Tourists in Jiuqu Cave After Hualien Earthquake

A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 occurred in Hualien on the 3rd. On the morning of the third day after the earthquake, the Pingtung and Taitung special search teams advanced into the 173K Jiuqu Cave on the Provincial Route 8 Zhongheng Highway and braved falling rocks to successfully rescue 10 trapped tourists. It turned out to be Lai Mengchuan, the “Four Heroes of Jiamu” who took the risk to open a helicopter landing site with three other volunteers and rescued hundreds of villagers during the August 8 Typhoon.

According to a report from China Times News Network, the special search team entered Jiuqu Cave on foot in the morning. Along the way, there were a lot of falling rocks and collapsed mounds of earth. After the special search team came into contact with 10 trapped tourists, they found that one of them had a broken foot. Unable to walk, Lai Mengchuan immediately used the wisdom of the special service troops and the indigenous people to use local materials to form a simple carrying system using branches and headbands to carry the injured out of the disaster area. His powerful carrying ability amazed everyone.

In 2009, Typhoon Morakot devastated Nantai. Jiamu Village, located in the mountains of Pingtung, suddenly became an isolated island on land. More than a hundred Rukai people were trapped in the mountains. At that time, four tribal youths, Ke Xinxiong, Lai Mengchuan, Xu Renhui, and Xu Renming, were members of the Nansou Mountain Disaster Relief Association and the Liangshan Special Service Team of the Aviation Special Department respectively. They were not afraid of heavy rains and landslides, and volunteered to enter the tribe to build a temporary heliport to help rescue all the tribesmen.

Lai Mengchuan, who once served in the High Altitude Special Service Platoon (Liangshan Special Service Team) of the Army Aviation Special Department, joined the Pingtung County Fire Department Special Search Team after retiring. With the special search team, they appeared in various major and minor disasters in Taiwan to carry out rescue missions. Lai Mengchuan said that after receiving the notice this time, he immediately rushed to Hualien with his teammates to provide support. He also hoped to use his expertise to save people and help the trapped people escape safely. He also hoped that God would bless Taiwan.
