Bulgarian officer‘s Drug Bust Earns Him ”Policeman of the Year” Award
Junior Inspector Martin Nanchev, a senior officer at the Tsarevo border crossing in Bulgaria, has been named “Policeman of the Year” for his remarkable work in thwarting a major drug smuggling operation. His sharp observation and decisive action led to the seizure of a notable quantity of narcotics, a feat lauded by his superiors and colleagues alike.
The award recognizes nanchev’s professionalism, quick thinking, and independent operation. “This award is a recognition of hard work,” Nanchev said. “It is indeed not only an individual but also a collective award. It’s teamwork.I was very surprised, I never thought of that. 10 years is not a lot of work and time, it passes very quickly when everything becomes routine,” he added.
The incident occurred on July 16th during a routine inspection of a yacht heading towards Turkey.Nanchev recounted the events: “It was about midsummer, July 16. I was on shift at the Tsarevo checkpoint. The yacht in question arrived with a crew of two. Based on the captain’s behavior and the yacht’s route, we selected it for further inspection. She was going to Turkey. Inside, there were compromised details, caches built in hard-to-reach places in the vessel’s cavities.”
The discovery of the hidden drugs aboard the yacht marked a significant precedent in Bulgarian law enforcement. Nanchev’s keen observation of the crew’s suspicious behavior proved crucial. He explained, “It can be nervousness, talking incoherently, avoiding contact. There was no escape attempt, but from the cases so far of all criminals, when we find the place with the hidden goods, they run from that place. After we ascertained the amount inside, colleagues from the border Police worked on the case all day.”
The accomplished operation underscores the ongoing global fight against drug trafficking. The seizure prevented a considerable amount of narcotics from reaching the streets, a point Nanchev emphasized: “I feel satisfaction when all the efforts made lead to real results and the process of such a large amount of drugs coming to the street is interrupted so that it dose not reach our children.”
the recognition extends beyond professional accolades. Upon returning home, Nanchev was greeted by his two sons with the heartfelt words, “Dad, you’re our hero.” While humbled by the praise, he modestly stated, “He says he doesn’t feel like one, he’s just doing his job.” He further shared his aspirations for his sons, saying, “If they go that way, I’ll help them. They are interested, every time they ask me how the working day was.I want to teach them mostly to be human.”
On the occasion of Border Police Day, Nanchev extended his well wishes to his colleagues, hoping for continued success in their professional and personal lives. He also offered advice to aspiring officers: “to have a sense of duty to the state, to be loyal and honest and to draw from the experience of the elders.”

Dimitar Ivanov,Retired Bulgarian Border police Commander: Thank you. It was a routine day, midsummer, July 16th. I was on shift at the Tsarevo checkpoint. A yacht heading towards Turkey came in, crewed by two individuals. Something about the captain’s demeanor and the unusual route the yacht was taking made me decide to conduct a more thorough inspection.
Senior Editor, world-today-news.com: What tipped you off that there might be something illicit onboard?
Dimitar Ivanov, Retired Bulgarian Border Police Commander: It’s often a combination of factors, you know? Maybe it’s nervousness, struggling to answer questions coherently, avoiding eye contact. They weren’t trying to flee, but in most cases we’ve encountered, when contraband is discovered, they tend to make a run for it. After finding these skillfully concealed compartments within the yacht’s structure,my colleagues from the border police worked tirelessly throughout the day to process the scene and secure the evidence.
