“Herne Black Barons suffer defeat in season opener against Schiefbahn Riders”

Herne.
The Herne Black Barons started with a defeat. a running back from Herne looked afterwards “as if a truck had run over him”.

Everything was actually set up for a perfect football day in Herner. The Black Barons U16s had rolled out the red carpet for the seniors. In the syndicate with the Duisburg Vikings, the youngsters swept SG Amboss/Paladines 48:8 off the field. Cheering in the Horst Stadium, proud faces everywhere and the chest got a little wider. Just a few hours later, viewers were looking at different faces. The season opener of the Black Barons in the association league went wrong.

The 6:17 (6:10) against the Schiefbahn Riders was again a game that the supporters, coaches and players of the Black Barons had often experienced in previous years. The defense worked. The offense line did their best. The running game at least good. If only it weren’t for the individual mistakes.

Only the passing game does not work as desired with the Black Barons

The story of the game is quickly told. Two fumble recovery touchdowns sealed the Herner defeat. The momentary upswing, with a personal touchdown shortly before the break by running back Maximilian Weitz, was quickly deflated. “The game really deserves the title unlucky,” says head coach Kai-Uwe Weitz. “We were actually on the trigger before half-time, got the ball and then such an annoying mistake happened right after kick-off.”

Herner’s rebellion in the last quarters was not rewarded. The Riders downplayed the clock too cleverly for that. The physical play of the guests did the rest. “I saw one of our running backs afterwards. He looked as if a truck had run over him,” says Weitz.

The disappointment was of course great after the botched start, says Weitz. However, there are also things that can give cause for cautious optimism. The team has many new faces. The first league game was also the first real endurance test. How does the first location determination turn out? “We’ve seen that the O-Line is good and the defense can play really well. The running backs also showed a good game,” Weitz replies. Only the passing game remains a construction site. Even if quarterback Tim Schiffer tried his best, the Black Barons didn’t get much airborne.

The fact that kicker Florian Rehrmann didn’t hit a field goal and the extra point in his first football game doesn’t worry the head coach: “The extra point is blocked, that can happen. And with the field goal, we have to see if he was even able to do anything about it. Maybe the coordination was missing.” Kai-Uwe Weitz and his coaching team don’t have much time to analyze the mistakes. The next game at Wesseling Blackvenom is already on Sunday (30 April, 3 p.m.), who won their opening game against the Gelsenkirchen Devils by 20:14.

“It’s good that it’s going straight ahead,” says Weitz and expects a similar opponent as last weekend. The second game of the season should also be physical and defense-heavy. In addition to a more complete offensive performance, Weitz wishes for the game in Wesseling: “That little bit of luck.”
