CHICAGO (AP) – Andrew Benintendi drove in three runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the struggling Chicago Cubs 9-1 Sunday, ending a sweep of their weekend series.
It was Chicago’s 13th straight loss at Wrigley Field, a franchise record.
Benintendi and Carlos Santana each had three hits in Kansas City’s sixth win in seven games. Hunter Dozier doubled and drove in two runs.
Venezuelan Royals right-hander Carlos Hernández (4-1) struck out eight, and covered seven innings for personals. He accepted one run and four hits.
Frank Schwindel had two hits for the Cubs, who have lost 18 of 22 after transferring stars Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez and Craig Kimbrel.
For the Royals, Carlos Santana 5-3 with one run scored and one produced. The Venezuelan Salvador Pérez 5-0. Puerto Rican Emmanuel Rivera 4-2 with a run scored.
For the Cubs, Sergio Alcántara 2-0. Venezuelan Rafael Ortega 4-0.
