Heritage Day attracts 290,000 visitors in Corona time

Flemish minister of immovable heritage Matthias Diependaele (N-VA) raced through the Flemish provinces on his first Heritage Day. He announced that he would like to reconsider funding for the restoration of heritage. “We tend to let it go very far and then do total renovations”, says Diependaele.

He wants to increase the financing of the maintenance of monumental buildings so that renovation costs are reduced in the long term. The minister also wants bonuses to be awarded more quickly and for local authorities to play an important role in the management of the assets. “Today we have a waiting list of 5 to 6 years. That is not good for local authorities and private owners who feel like and eager to invest.”
