The start is on Staten Island, near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. This bridge takes you to Brooklyn. Most of the route is covered there. Shortly after the halfway point, the participants cross the Pularski Bridge into nearby Queens. When you reach the third bridge, the Queensboro Bridge, there is the steepest climb of the race.
This attempt is followed by the arrival of Manhattan. After that there’s a short stretch through the Bronx before the field of runners returns to the upper region. Now we will go through the Harlem area to the famous Fifth Avenue shopping street. The final stage first goes down to Central Park and then through where the finish line is.
The marathon through New York City is one of the “World Marathon Majors” along with Tokyo, Boston, London, Chicago and Berlin. The final “Big Six” race of the year takes place in the “Big Apple”.
