In a recent survey commissioned by Twitter, it was found that Indian women enjoy talking about their passion and challenges, as well as discussing current affairs and social change on the microblogging site. The survey was the result of independent research conducted to understand why Indian women use Twitter.
A quantitative survey was conducted among 700 women on Twitter, as well as the qualitative retention and analysis of 522,992 Tweets sent by female Twitter accounts between January 2019 and February 2021 by women in 10 Indian cities.
The study found that Indian women have created a unique space on the Twitterverse with a wide range of conversations. 39% of women surveyed believe that Twitter offers them freedom of expression. Among the most discussed topics on Twitter, points of passion and interests emerged as the main topic. The survey claims that 24.9% of women talk about their interests / hobbies on the site. In this category, 41% of women discovered a new interest on Twitter. Many women were looking for content on fashion (30%), books (28%), beauty (25%), movies and TV (21%), music (18%), food (18%) ), technology (17%), art (17%) and sport (14%).
News (20.8%), times of celebration (14.5%), communities (11.7%) and social change (8.7%) were also in the top five conversation topics among women on Twitter. The report claims Indian women are tweeting to empower and bring about change in society through online movements such as #SheforShe and #TimesUp. Bengaluru, Guwahati and Delhi are leading the way in shedding light on critical issues.
Women on Twitter also don’t hold back when it comes to supporting their community. Over the years, they have harnessed the power of Tweets to spark and participate in several social movements like the #MeToo movement.
In India, women (6.9%) tweet about challenges, whether it’s working from home with kids or being a single mom. Although personal, these shared experiences are relatable, which allows them to build a shared intimacy in public.
In a press release, it was revealed, “While conversations around daily chatter and celebratory moments saw the highest engagement in terms of average likes and Tweet responses, Passion points and interests, communities and shared challenges were the most retweeted categories. ”
The cities also presented their different talking points: Chennai led conversations around moments of celebration, creative showcase and daily gossip, Bengaluru dominated the gossip around communities, social change and shared challenges, while Guwahati conducted conversations around the points and interests of passion and current affairs.
Manish Maheshwari, Managing Director of Twitter India, said in a press release: “We commissioned this research to deepen our understanding of women on Twitter and we were inspired by the results. This information shows us that Twitter is for every woman. Their communities and conversations highlight the uniqueness and diversity of the service. “
“Access to a free and open Internet allowed everyone to express themselves freely without barriers. As a service, our goal is to build on this foundation, giving people new ways to converse, form communities and control who can interact with them in a conversation, ”he added.
Tweets on #ModernDating, Mental Health are also shared by women during this time. Madurai and Mumbai have led the trend of personal talk on Twitter. From #SareeTwitter to #LockdownRecipes, women love to tweet and share their daily experiences; Chennai and Mumbai are having conversations in this regard.
