Photo from 72nd birthday

Launch DW, Saturday (13/3/2021), Einstein’s iconic photo was taken when the scientist was celebrating his 72nd birthday, on March 14, 1951.

At the time, Einstein was working as a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

On his 72nd birthday, his colleagues threw a birthday party at the research center where Einstein worked.

Knowing the day was Einstein’s birthday celebration, the paparazzi were waiting outside the research center.

They hoped to get Einstein’s statement or opinion about the global political situation at that time, as well as a photo of his birthday celebration.

The look of annoyance was photographed by the paparazzi

Einstein has long been recognized for his dislike of media coverage. So that at that time, he was irritated by the presence of the paparazzi.

Even so, while sitting in the limousine with research center director Frank Aydelotte and his wife Marie Aydelotte, Einstein couldn’t escape the paparazzi’s camera lens any longer.

“Enough, enough,” said Einstein at the time as he dispelled them.

However, one of the paparazzi crowd replied.

“Hey professor, smile first for birthday photos,” said the man.

So annoyed, Einstein stuck out his tongue at the paparazzi. Unexpectedly, this rare moment was captured by a photographer, Arthur Sasse.

The result, as is well known, the photo of Einstein with disheveled hair and a “popping” tongue spread around the world and became iconic.

However, the popularity of the photo sticking out Einstein’s tongue was not due to the photographer’s birthday, Arthur Sasse, but because of Einstein’s own actions.

Einstein ordered many prints of the photos and cut them out, so that the Aydelottees were no longer visible in the photos.

He then sent dozens of photos to colleagues, friends and acquaintances, accompanied by a message.

“The tongue that sticks out reflects my political views,” Einstein wrote to his friend Johanna Fantova.

In 2009, the original copy of the photo, which Einstein signed in person, sold for $ 74,324 (about Rp. 1 billion in current exchange rates) at an auction.

The high price for Einstein’s iconic portrait makes it the most expensive portrait of a genius ever.

An eccentric genius scientist

Quoting Kompas.com, January 18, 2021, Einstein’s most popular work is the equation E = MC2, which shows that mass and energy are the same entity.

This equation broke the thinking of previous scientists, who believed that mass and energy were completely unrelated.

The equation E = MC2 can be read as energy equal to mass times the square of the speed of light.

Einstein died on April 18, 1955 at the age of 76 at the University Medical Center in Princeton, New Jersey, United States.

Today, more than 60 years after his death, Einstein’s name still hasn’t faded.

Not only because of his findings, the younger generation also recognized Einstein as an eccentric genius.
