Here’s how to use the full 48MP iPhone 14 Pro camera

One of the biggest updates to the iPhone 14 Pro’s camera system is the increase of the main lens to 48 MP with what Apple calls an “advanced quad-pixel sensor”. However, the camera captures 12MP images by default. Read on to find out how to use the 48MP iPhone 14 Pro camera.

Shooting with the 48MP full-resolution primary camera on the iPhone 14 Pro isn’t something you’ll want to do all the time with a single image ranging from 75-100MB +.

But when you want to capture as much detail as possible, allowing for impressive cropping, using the full power of the iPhone 14 Pro’s main camera is essential.

Offering 8064 x 6048 pixels, it’s 4 times the resolution compared to 12MP shots. And Apple says, “With a new machine learning model designed specifically for the quad-pixel sensor, iPhone now shoots ProRAW at 48MP in unprecedented detail, enabling new creative workflows for professional users.”

  1. If it’s not already enabled, active Apple ProRAW
  2. Open the App settings on your iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max
  3. Scroll down and Tap Camera
  4. Now choose Formats on the top
  5. press the active next to Apple ProRAW – the default resolution for Apple ProRAW should be 48 MP
  6. Now open the Camera app, make sure RAW is displayed in the top right or bottom right corner and is not crossed out – shoot!

You can also choose to keep the ProRAW setting enabled in the camera app instead of resetting it to available but disabled when you open the default camera: Settings> Camera> Keep settings> Apple ProRAW.
