One easy way that can help you lose weight is by consuming the right drink, namely water.
But, often drinking water is not considered important in weight loss.
In fact, 20% of your daily calorie intake entirely comes from drinks. For the average person, that equates to about 400 calories a day.
So making the right choices about what to drink is paramount when it comes to losing weight, and that’s why dietitians say, plain water is the best thing to drink to control your weight.
Amy Davis, RD, LDN, from The Balanced Dietitian says that most people don’t drink enough water, so they often confuse hunger when they’re thirsty.
“Having a daily goal of drinking water can help control weight, by preventing us from drinking other drinks that are high in calories and sugar, such as soda, sweetened coffee, and energy drinks,” said Davis.
How to drink water to help lose weight
Research has shown that drinking water increases metabolism by increasing the rate at which the body burns calories.
In just one hour, drinking water can increase your metabolism by 24%.
Drinking water can also help you feel full, thereby preventing you from consuming unnecessary calories.
A study published in the journal Obesity found that drinking 2 cups of water before meals can help you lose weight by helping you eat fewer calories.
In fact, the researchers found that those who drank plain water before eating, ended up losing 2 pounds more over the course of 12 weeks, compared to those who ate without being asked to drink water beforehand.
As Davis says, the best way to drink water to help you lose weight is to replace other higher calorie drinks, such as coffee, milk tea, or alcoholic beverages with water.
Lisa DeFazio, MS, RD, a registered dietitian, said that during the Covid-19 pandemic and activity restrictions made many people drink more high-calorie and high-sugar drinks. This will add weight, especially in the abdominal area.
“It opens up your appetite, increases the desire to eat sugar, and you will eat more. The next day you will feel more tired and less likely to exercise,” he concluded. (Bestari Kumala Dewi)
