Here’s How to Differentiate from Common Cough with Corona Virus Cough

VIVA – Coughing is one of the symptoms corona virus or the most common COVID-19. This disease is also usually accompanied by fever and fatigue, which makes the patient feel cold or flu.

It is important to detect corona virus symptoms early to avoid transmission and potential complications. One way is by observing whether your cough is a symptom of COVID-19 or an ordinary cough or because of other conditions, according to Maja Husaric and Vasso Apostolopoulos from Victoria University.

Reported Medical Daily, Tuesday, June 30, 2020, COVID-19 cough is a dry cough, persistent, and can make the individual concerned experience shortness of breath. That’s because the corona virus irritates lung tissue.

As it develops, the affected tissue may be filled with fluid. The patient will then experience more shortness of breath as the body struggles to get enough oxygen.

“Coughing is sometimes healthy. But a cough that lasts for weeks, produces bloody mucus, causes phlegm discoloration or is accompanied by fever, dizziness, or fatigue, may be a sign you need to see a doctor,” Husaric and Apostolopoulos said in an article .

Some people may also experience coughing due to other conditions that are not caused by the corona virus. Usually the type is a wet cough, which involves phlegm that moves from the lungs and lowers the airways to the mouth.

Fluid in the airways causes a ‘wet’ sound when coughing (phlegm). In some cases, people also make wheezing sounds when breathing.

Whereas dry cough, which is caused by COVID-19, does not produce phlegm. It usually starts in the back of the throat and causes sounds like barking.

“Dry cough doesn’t clean your airways, so sufferers often describe it as an unsatisfactory cough,” Husaric and Apostolopoulos said.

However, the cough can start to dry but eventually it gets wet in some conditions. For example, people with pneumonia often show a dry cough. However, as the infection develops, the lung air sacs can be filled with inflammatory secretions and cause a wet cough.

If you see a doctor, here are some common questions people get about coughing.

– How long have you been coughing?
– When does the cough feel worse? Night, morning, all day?
– How is the cough sound?
– Does coughing cause symptoms, such as vomiting, dizziness or difficulty sleeping?
– How bad is your cough? Does it interfere with daily activities?
